Services Job Summary The Manager Entrepreneurship Services will be responsible to create and direct (in collaboration with the VP Economic Development and other members of the Economic Development team) a scale of de novo programs to directly support entrepreneurial activities of faculty, staff, and students, the outside business community and international guest lecturers to facilitate entrepreneurial activities on campus and to create an entrepreneurial culture at KAUST and, ultimately, to influence the culture outside KAUSTs immediate community.
Entrepreneurship Services mission is to incubate the emerging businesses by providing practical business skills, critical resources, access to markets and capital.
Build a small in-house team to develop and cultivate a network of external resources to provide the following programs and services to support entrepreneurship:
o Culture building activities (e.g., business plan competitions, product prototyping/marketing competitions, lectures by angel investors and successful technical entrepreneurs) through specific no-fee or low-fee services for entrepreneurs
o Support for business plan development
o Start-up operations management
o Legal and financial structure tutorials for students and faculty interested in forming companies
o Market analysis for products and services in the region and in the Kingdom
Work, where feasible, with a technology management and entrepreneurship cross-
cutting program to be located within the KAUST academic enterprise.
Plan and manage an academic program in entrepreneurship.
o Develop the program curriculum
o Plan and schedule entrepreneurship courses, workshops and other events
o Liaison with relevant KAUST academic committees/officers
Manage and facilitate student programs and activities in entrepreneurship.
o Organize student activities to encourage entrepreneurship
o Counsel students and potential students on entrepreneurship activities and resources
o Provide resources for students working on businesses, such as mentoring and information
o Track student initiated businesses working with alumni to maintain contact after students graduate; maintain database on these ventures
Design and manage events to encourage entrepreneurship.
o Assess needs and develop concepts for entrepreneurship events/programs on campus
o Execute events: identifying speakers, calendaring, marketing, website promotion
o Maintain relationship with guest speakers and provide support where needed
Manage marketing and communications to campus, the business community and
o Represent the program to internal and external constituencies
o Publicize the programs activities to departments on campus
o Develop marketing communications materials for various audiences
o Develop and maintain content for the program website
o Build relationships with and assimilate best practices from other entrepreneurship centers
Leverage KAUST existing network of global partners, universities, entrepreneurs and businesses.
Support other activities in the department, such as the seed fund, corporate sponsors and global collaborations. Participate as part of the departments management team.
Ability to work collaboratively with government, industry, university-affiliated entities, research faculty, university research administration, graduate students, and with colleagues at all KAUST-related organizations fostering a cooperative work environment.
Demonstrated international experience.
Excellent written and oral English.
Computer literate Word, PowerPoint, spreadsheets and database.
Non-Technical Skills or Attributes:
Strong organizational skills.
Capable of dealing with constantly changing priorities.
Ability to work within tight timelines and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills.
First degree in science and or engineering. A second degree at Masters level in business and evidence of at least 7 to 10 years of direct experience providing support services to startup or entrepreneurial companies. (e.g., strategy, product development, legal or operational advisory services) to emerging companies.
Minimum of ten (10) years of cumulative experience with:
Experience in a start-up company with a similar entrepreneurial environment.
Experience with start-up companies and/or spun out of universities or university-
related research institutes are preferred.
While direct experience with entrepreneurial companies and start-ups is required, perhaps the most important qualification for success will be the creativity and energy to lead the development of an open, encouraging environment for all types of tech-based entrepreneurial activities at an institution such as KAUST.
Experience interfacing with students, marketing communications and event and program coordination.
Familiarity with university-based research and graduate education, both mission and operations.
Ability to effectively manage several tasks and projects at the same time.
Teaching background is desirable.
This person should be entrepreneurial in
nature, comfortable with lack of definition and able to help shape a new program that is itself a startup.
